IMPHAL May 3: Prominent student bodies of the state, AMSU, DESAM, MSF and KSA have decried the lack of attention from the state government side towards the education sector in the state.
A press meet held at the AMSU headquarter located at DM college campus saw MSF general secretary Anash Shah condemning the state education department for non disbursal of SSA text books to the students. The students have not availed the SSA textbooks since last year, the students have not been given the textbooks which are meant for free distribution, this is an unforgivable act from the education department officials and violates the right to education, he maintained.
In regard to the issue, the student organizations conducted a drive today at the office of the ZEO`™s of Imphal East, Thoubal and Bisnupur and collected the SSA textbooks found stored in the offices. He announced that the seized textbooks will be distributed to the deserving students within a week`™s time.
Shah further commented that, many items meant for free distribution under the SSA scheme like uniforms, school bags and other items have been found missing, whereas the books which are not profitable are found being hoarded in the storage offices of the ZEO`™s. In the light of the matter, the student organizations have appealed to the concerned authorities to investigate and bring the erring officials to task.
Such ignorance from the concerned department states that the education sector has collapsed in the state and the ministers are concerned only for contract works to fill their coffers.
It is evident that the failure to address the education sector in the recent Assembly sittings clearly states that the promotion of free education is being grossly ignored by the officials in power, he said.
Assistant general secretary of DESAM, Thoithoi stated that consignments of SSA books have been found stored in a dilapidated condition.
Further, the education sector which remains stagnated needs intervention from the state authorities for the welfare of the students, he said.
