`Touching lives` highlights lives touched by HIV

IMPHAL May 15: Manipur Network of Positive people today observed the 28th International AIDS candlelight memorial day 2011, with the theme, “touching lives”. The theme wishes to highlight how HIV has touched the lives of many people and how an improved HIV response with more treatment access, better prevention methods and better prevention methods and respect for human rights and dignity touches the lives of people living with and affected by HIV. The observation was held at the office premises of MNP+ located at Yaiskul Hiruhanba Leikai, Imphal Manipur.The event was held in commemoration of all those lives that have been affected by AIDS.The observation was attended by Dr.Tomcha Khuman, Deputy Director, TI & Blood Safety, MACS, as the chief guest, L. Deven Singh, Treasurer, MNP+ as president and Vikram Nepram, chief functionary Life Line Foundation as guest of honour. In his speech as the guest of honour Dr. Tomcha opined that proper awareness should be made to create easy access to proper treatment and care for all those suffered by HIV. He also added that many innocent lives were lost and further raised his concerned over the issue of overcharging and non availability of medicines that are otherwise supposed to be dispensed at free of cost.He also said that he would extend any necessary assistance to people living with and affected by HIV from MACS in collaboration with the Association of voluntary blood donators formed to suffice the problems of unavailability blood donors among HIV victims. During the function a symbolic lighting of candles was held to remember all those lost lives. The function was attended by members and functionaries of MNP+ and other guest and invitees.The event, coordinated by the global network of positive people living with HIV, has been observed every year since 1983 and it is said to be the longest running community event around HIV and AIDS. Meanwhile the Nirvana Foundation, South Babupara, Imphal, also observed the International AIDS Candle Light Memorial Day, 2011 promoting the theme ‘Touching Lives’ on May 15 at Khomidok, Ipum Mapal.According to a release of the foundation as a continuation of the programme, volunteers, staffs of the organization will light candles at night while gifts were presented to ten HIV infected individuals, it further added.In a separate press release the Manipur Positive Women Network, Wangkhei, also stated that it observed the 28th International Candle Light Memorial on May 15 with the members of district level Network of Manipur Positive Women Network to promote the theme ‘Touching Lives’, at their conference hall.The observation included prayers and floral tributes by the participants for the departed souls of those whose lives had been claimed by AIDS, it added.
