Tourism could be a big factor towards economic development in state: Governor

IMPHAL May 30:  “Arts and Culture do not develop in an atmosphere of neglect, depreciation or contempt however it will never suffer from over-appreciation.
We should do everything in our power to encourage arts and culture which will help in making Manipur even more organized and cultured” said Gurbachand Jagat, Governor of Manipur and chairman of Manipur State Kala Akedemi in his speech as the chief guest of an award presentation ceremony which was held at the JNMDA auditorium this evening.
The presentation of Akedemi fellows and Award ceremony for 2009 was organized by the Manipur State Kala Akedemi, Imphal. Praising the development of Arts and culture, and sports movement in the state the Governor added that Manipur needs nothing else from any one but peace and tranquility to go forward.
He also opined that the state has the added advantages for economic gains if proper infrastructural initiatives for tourism are implemented. He further added that the state is a force to reckon with in sports and culture in the country and the same effect could be exerted in the economic front too.
During the ceremony, the Manipur State Kala Akedemi confered two fellows and awarded fifteen state award to various renowned personalities of the state in different categories in recognition of their contributions and dedications in their respective fields.
The fellowships were conferred to Rk. Danisana, in recognition of his versatility as a dancer and a performing artiste and Elangbam Sonamani Singh for his eminent and invaluable contributions in the field of culture and literature.
The awards were awarded in the field of dance, music, theatre, shumang leela, folk music (Penna), narrative arts (Wari- Leeba), martial art (Thang- ta), tribal culture, literature and fine arts. The Akedemi also conferred an Honourable mention to Laiphrakpam Ningol Oinam (o) Dhoni Devi in acknowledgement of her eminence and contributions in the field of Lai Haraoba Dance.
Later in the evening, different solo and group performing arts were presented. The function was attended by scholars, critics, well wishers and other invitees.
