UBI appeals sought help and cooperation

IMPHL, May 10: The United Bank of India has appealed to the Churachandpur District Students’ Union (CDSU) to withdraw their agitation and sought help and cooperation in extending banking service in the hill disrtrict.The CDSU had announced shut-down of the district’s sole currency-chest bank, the UBI Churachandpur branch effective from May 9 due to the intermittent exhaustion of currency, inadequate ATM booths and bank staff. Meanwhile regretting the inconvenience caused to the customers, UBI in a press release here has sought help and cooperation in extending banking service to the people of the Churachandpur.CDSU has demanded improvement in shortage of currency situation, improvement in manpower position and installation of 2nd ATM at Churachandpur, according to the release.“UBI took up with the Reserve Bank of India the issue of shortage of currency not only in Churachandpur but also in other Currency Chest branches in Manipur”, it said. “RBI responded positively in April this year and appropriate long-term measure has already been taken jointly by RBI and UBI so that this problem does not repeat itself in the near future. Presently, there is no shortage of currency in Churachandpur, but customers are not getting any benefit of this due to the current agitation.”The release stated that the UBI had conducted recruitment examination in November, 2010 and has already recruited 22 fresh employees exclusively for the state of Manipur including three from Churachandpur district.It further said, “In recent days, UBI has started setting up of more and more ATMs in Manipur. After opening of ATM at Churachandpur in February last year, further ATMs were installed in Mao, Moirang and Ukhrul. Also, ATM machines have arrived for Thoubal, Tamenglong and Imphal (3rd ATM) and installation work is under progress at these places”.The proposal of setting up of another (2nd) ATM at Churachandpur is under process and people of Churachandpur may have to wait for some time to draw money from it, although the survey of site for 2nd ATM at Churachandpur is already over.Besides, the bank is looking to shift the Churachandpur branch to a better and more suitable building but as it could not find a suitable one, it now plans to remodel / renovate the existing premises in order to give more space and better ambience to the customers, the release further added.Empanelled Architects have already been asked to submit plan & estimate for the remodeling, it added.
