IMPHAL May 10: Laiharaoba and the Meiteis share a deep innate relation. The Meitei customary practices, cultures and traditions have its deep root in Laiharaoba that have been associated with the Meiteis since time immemorial. It is a well structured and has indept philosophical meaning. However, the present trend in Laiharaoba are a matter of concern. It has rather deviated just as a mere form of entertainment show from what it actually signifies remarked Prof. N. Tombi Singh, vice chairman, JNMDA during his speech as the chief guest of the inaugural function of 5 days festival of Laiharaoba at the Jawarhar Lal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy campus .At the laibung of Ibodhou Chakkhaba inside the campus of the Jawarhar Lal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, today, an inaugural function was held to mark the beginning of the festival wherein various forms of Laiharaoba will be showcase for five days. Apart from Chakpa, Kanglei and Moirang Laiharaoba, an ensemble of other forms of Laiharaoba from different parts of the state will also be showcased during the festival. In his opening speech, Dilip Mayengbam, director, JNMDA said that the festival will incorporate open discussions, demonstrations and lectures on the underlying meaning and values of the various forms of Laiharaoba. Typical portrayal of Sekmai, Andro, Khurkhul and Kakching dances will also be highlighted during the festival. The festival was started from last year, he further added. The inaugural function was graced by Padmashree Kh. Mangi,Penna (traditional string instrument) exponent as the president and Prof. N.Tombi Singh, chairman, JNMDA as the chief guest respectively.
