Visiting rights group denied meeting Sharmila asserts group

IMPHAL May 11: Resenting the action of the concern authority for refusing to give access to meet Irom Sharmila chanu, the All Assam Shramik Krishak Parishad (AASKKP) called a press conference today, at the office of the Human Rights Alert, Imphal, Manipur.
A five member team of the AASKKP including Suren Narzary, secretary Kamrup dist, Pradip Kalita State chief secretary, Surrendra Nath Baishya, state advisor, Ganga Boro advisor, women cell and Karabi Baruah, secy, women cell arrived here yesterday with an intention to meet Sharmila, however, the authority concerned refused them permission.
Talking to the media persons, Suren Narzary, secretary Kamrup dist, (AASKKP) resented and expressed his disagreement at the central government’s laid back attitudes in dealing with various issues in the North Eastern region. He strongly condemned the central government for the latter’s indifferent attitudes and policies meted out to the region. He said that on May 3, a 24 hour hunger strike in solidarity to Irom Sharmila was observed at Dispur last gate, Assam.
 An application was submitted today to the addlt secretary, Home deparment, Manipur seeking permission to meet Sharmila on June 1.
On the other side, the People’s Union of civil Liberties (PUCL) and National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM) is organizing a nation wide series of protest rally demanding the repeal of AFSPA in solidarity with Irom Sharmila during May 22 to August 18, 2011. Incidentally, on May 22, in 1958 AFSPA was promulgated in the northeast as an ordinance and on August 18, 1958, the parliament endorsed the ordinance as an act, despite stiff resistance from various quarters.
The organization has appealed to all the civil society groups, human rights groups and the people’s movements to initiate various public protest actions from May 22 to August 18, demanding immediate repeal of AFSPA, in solidarity with Irom Sharmila.
