Central team arrives to conduct pre-disaster risk reduction discussion

IMPHAL, June 15: A three member team of the National Disaster Management Authority of the ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), government of India consisting of Brig. Dr. BK Khanna retd. commandant of 1st Bn National Response of MHA, CP Sakshena and asst. commandant, Sunil Kumar Sekhawat have arrived in the state capital this morning to conduct a two day discussion on pre-disaster risk reduction and mitigation which has been identified by the state in collaboration with state relief and rehabilitation department at the State Guest House, Sanjenthong starting from June 16.

According to an official source the proposed discussion is a follow up of the workshop held on disaster scenario of the North East region with special emphasis on floods and earthquakes which was held at Guwahati on May 11 wherein it was decided to set up a Regional Data base Centre for all disasters occurring in the region and a Regional DM Decision Support Centre at NESCA which will be jointly funded by ISRO/NEC.

Besides the official visiting team while relying on the state official reports that the entire Manipur state is lying in a highly prevalent seismic zone, will conduct a table top exercise on earthquake disaster during the discussion which will be attended by official representatives from state Police, Manipur fire services and Home guards so as to acquire scientific knowledge for those pre-disaster risk reduction and mitigation, the source added.
