Criminals on the loose in state claims public meeting speaker

IMPHAL, June 12: A mass rally cum public meeting in protest against growing numbers of violence against women and children was organized today at Khurai, Imphal East district.

Over hundreds of people including women and children took part in the rally which started from RAU ground, Khurai and after covering different part of Imphal concluded at Khurai Sajor Leikai, where a public meeting was also conveyed on the issue.

The meet was attended by Rakesh Meihoubam, director Human Rights Law Network, Kangujam Madhumangol, Rose Mangshi, senior Journalist and president AMWJU, A Mobi and G. Satyabati Devi, director Social Welfare, as the presidium members.

Apart from them, the meeting was also attended by family members and many victims of crimes.

Rakesh Meihoubam maintained that criminals involved in heinous crimes are left loose and the Police department is unable to take action against them.

He further alleged lack of discipline and sensitization of the state police force as the reasons for the police incompetence in the state

He said that lack of discipline and sensitization was the reason for the incompetence of the Police.

The director Social Welfare, G. Satyabati, contended that culprits involved in cases of killing women and children are often granted bail thereby inflicting a psychological trauma to the family members of the victims.

She also stated that the number of widows and orphans in the state has increased manifold over the years.

She said that the number of orphan in 2009 was 2222 which has today increased to 4800. The number of widows including whose husbands have been killed in armed violence has increased to 11,000.

She conveyed that the government of India has taken up a scheme called the Indira Gandhi National Widow Benefit Scheme under which a sum of Rs. 2000 will be provided to the destitute widows as yearly pension.

The social welfare director further stated that children from the state often fall victims to human trafficking at the hands of private companies and NGOs. She also stated that they are lured by the companies on the false promise of providing jobs and free education etc. and as such she urged the parents to be more aware and be extra careful while dealing with such organizations.

During the rally protestors displayed placards and banners which read as “Train Police Officers on Gender Issue”, “Stop Sex Discrimination Test”, “Wake up Intelligence Department” “Stop Child Labour”, “Create Special Mechanism to End Violence Against Women”, Reform Police Act” etc.
