Dialogue with insurgent brings down violence level in NE region

NEW DELHI, June 1 (Agencies): Government says that beginning of dialogue with insurgent groups in the North-Eastern region has helped to bring down the level of violence in that part of the country.

Presenting the report card of his Ministry, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said that two of the insurgent groups are expected to sign an agreement with the Centre in a couple of months and NSCN IM will present its document to the government for discussions soon.

In response to a question on Afzal Guru`s mercy petition, Chidambaram said that so far the Ministry has sent to President 19 cases of which 11 have been been decided.

On Maoist insurgency in Chattisgarh, he said there are certain areas where they have got the control. He described the situation as a stalemate. On the prsence of additional security forces in West Bengal, Mr. Chidambaram said that a call has to be taken by the State Government.

He expressed concern over the huge catche of unauthorised arms and ammunition being recovered in different parts of the State. The Home Minister gave details of the measures taken by his Ministry to modernise Central and State forces besides enacting legislations to deal with the menace of terrorism.
