Diesel auto rally marks International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking

IMPHAL, June 26: As a part of observing the International Day against Drug abuse and illicit trafficking, a diesel auto rally was organized by the social welfare department in collaboration with FINGODAP-Manipur Chapter, AMADA, CADA and Usher Manipur today covering the greater Imphal area starting from the Iboyaima Shumangleela Shanglen where the main function of the observation was held..

The observation was organized under the theme “Think Health, Not Drugs” with a public meeting at the Iboyaima Shumangleela Shanglen.

Meanwhile, speaking at the public meeting chief guest of the evening session of the observation, Manipur State Social Welfare Advisory Board, chairperson RK Noyonsana Devi implied that since the state forms the international boundary with international countries, the state has been facing various drug related problems including drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Further elaborating on the issue, she maintained that the drug problem was introduced in the early 1970’s and became a full blown issue in the 80’s.

She further elaborated that in the early 70’s, the problem was confined only to morphine, however by the 80’s people became aware of the spread of heroin amongst the youth. Later on drug abusers started using prescription drugs and have been continuing to do so.

She further thanked the various civil societies for spreading the awareness against drug abuse and illicit trafficker.

However, she added that the state police should collaborate with the civil bodies in the fight against drug abuse.

She further appealed to the general public to co-operate with the civil bodies and support them in their fight against the drug menace which spreading fast in the state.

Further appealing for the state to join hands in the fight, she appealed to the people to understand the plight of the young widows and their children whose husbands and fathers have become victims of drug abuse.

She further appealed to the public to joined hands and save the youth of the state, who are the pillars of tomorrow’s society.

Social welfare commissioner, Letkhogin Haokip observed that no amount of collaboration between the government, police and the civil societies can curb the menace, until the whole state start thinking about the issue at the individual level.

Further elaborating on the issue, he stated that all that the government through its social welfare department can do is spread the awareness against the menace, however until the individual start thinking about it, no amount of awareness will bring positive results.

Meanwhile, the diesel auto rally which preceded the public meeting was flagged off by social welfare minister N Loken Singh at around 10:30 am and was participated by around 100 diesel autos

During the rally the passenger vehicles carried various awareness related playcards with some reading “Drug free society for a peaceful and prosperous society”, “Addiction is a disease, treatment is mandatory”, “Save our youth from drug abuse for a better tomorrow”, “ Self realization, self responsibility, self protection against drug abuse and illicit trafficking” etc.

Meanwhile, the 14 Manipur Bn NCC also observed the day with a foot rally flagged off by speaker Manipur Legislative Assembly I Hemochadra from the DM college western gate in the morning.

Around 450 cadets holding banners which read “Life is beautiful live long and enjoy it”, “Drug ruins your body Drug ruins your society”, etc participated in the rally.
