Former militant cadre killed in alleged gun fight with IW commandos

IMPHAL, June 28: A former cadre of the proscribed PLA was killed in a gun battle with Imphal West district police commandos at Naoremthong Khullem Leikai today at around 2 am early morning.

According to an official source, on receiving credible information about the presence of UG cadres in the Naoremthong area, Imphal West police commandos conducted a search operation around the area.

Further according to the source, even as the police commandos were approaching a private residence during the search operation, some unidentified persons whose number remains unknown fired upon the commando team, eventually the commandos retaliated and in the ensuing gun fight, the former cadre of the PLA was killed.

The police commando recovered one 9mm pistol and two Chinese hand grenade from the courtyard of the victim, where the gun fight had occurred, added the source.

His dead body bore multiple bullet injuries.

The victim has been identified as Laishram Nilkan alias Nikola, 40, s/o L Modhu of Kakwa Naorem Leikai and presently residing at Naoremthong Khullem Leikai.

Meanwhile according to family source, Laishram Nilikan, a former cadre of the proscribed PLA was released from the jail only about a year back after serving a two year sentence.

Locals told media persons that numerous gun shots were hurt this early morning, however when they came out to enquire about the gun shots several police personnel already present around the area didn’t allow them to come out.

It was only in the morning that they came to know that Nikan has been killed in a gun fight in his own courtyard, they added.

Meanwhile family members have already received the dead body after post mortem.
