`I have heard new UG groups recruit drug addicts`: RK Meghen

IMPHAL June 23: Arrested UNLF chairman RK Meghen has urged the youths of the state to join the liberation movement and make the right decision of joining only principled groups to take the revolutionary movement forward.

He was speaking to reporters after coming out of the NIA courtroom at Guwahati today.

Speaking on the present issue regarding the birth of various new UG groups in the state, the chairman stated that he views the present issues with all seriousness and further said that the new UG groups are set up either by the security forces or government agencies to malign the image of the revolutionaries.

“I have heard that they recruit drug addicts also”, he added.

Replying to a query from the media, RK Meghen said that it is a known fact that the public have bored the brunt of the more than 30 years of suffering during the fight for independence.

“Numerous atrocities have been committed upon the public by the security forces and also by certain armed groups, but the people still stands strong and supports the struggle despite the ups and downs seen during this era of revolution, we should all stand strong and all the communities need to unite to attain the ultimate goal”, he said.

Commenting on the recent surrender of forty cadres of PULF and one KCP cadre to the Assam Rifles, he said that the fake surrender drama had been revealed and PULF also has acknowledged that in their statements.

“Such incidents try to show the revolutionary movement in the wrong light, besides the security forces are using the Kuki groups presently in suspension of operations with the government, to wage attacks on other insurgent groups, the surrenderees are also used by them to create disorder among the public and this affects the revolutionary movement also”, he said.

The chairman further said that “We should abandon the thoughts of factionalism, and the youths need to unite and fight for bringing about independence to Manipur from the colonial yoke, they should place their trust in the outfit which has the support of the people”.

“The Indian government has not intimated any notice about peace talks as of yet, but the UNLF will not budge from its stand of holding the plebiscite”, he added.

Charging the Chief Minister O Ibobi of hypocrisy, he said that the CM should learn to stick to his words. At one instance, stating that the plebiscite is a worthy exercise at the state assembly sittings and afterwards saying that the constitution of India is against it, that there should be no involvement of any third party in the plebiscite, and that the general elections are a form of plebiscite clearly indicates the insincerity of the Chief Minister.

The chairman along with other top functionaries of the UNLF were brought to the NIA special court at Guwahati by the Assam police today but absence of the concerned judge shifted the hearing to the court of the CJM (Cachari Area), the CJM further remanded the UNLF chairman and other cadres to judicial custody till July 7.
