IMPHAL, June 29: A Jawan of the 3rd India Reserve Battalion (IRB) posted at the Central jail Imphal, located at Old Lambulane, has reportedly deserted his post taking along with him two AK-47 rifles late last night.

The jawan has been identified as Chingthenlan Paite of Churachandpur district.

As per information received by media persons, the jawan was assigned to guard the arms store of the security personnel last night.

As per a reliable source, the incident came to light this morning when the authority found the doors to the arms store broken. An alarm was sounded by the jail authority and conducted a checking of list of personnel on duty for last night.

In the event of the checking, the deserted Jawan was found missing, said the source.

Subsequently a search operation was conducted in and around the jail including the barracks of the Jawans which are located inside the Jail complex led by DIG, Manglemjao.

During the search operation two concealed INSAS Rifles were also recovered from inside the barrack, which has been speculated by the sources as another plan to carry the arms away from the complex.

However there was no immediate official report on the incident till the filing of this report.

A company of the 3rd IRB is reportedly deployed for guarding the central jail under the command of one assistant commandant.

The Jail is sheltering above 40 women inmates. The Jail was earlier mended by the CRPF personnel who were recently replaced by the IRB.
