IMPHAL June 29: Works minister K Ranjit announced that the longest bridge in the state will be completed in July this year.

The minister was talking to media persons on the sidelines of a felicitation function held at Chin Tam community hall at Sugnu today, he said that the Chakpi bridge popularly known as the ‘Serou thong’ which is built above the Chakpi river bridging Sugnu and Serou is 99 % complete.

“The bridge which has a length of 800 feet is built under the SPA after getting approval in 2007 at a projected cost of Rs. 19 crores, there has been disturbances from certain organizations regarding the project as masons had been kidnapped and contractors were threatened, the bridge which has a time frame of completion in three years have been extended to four years, however without those disturbances it would have been completed long back”, he said.

The minister mentioned that Serou is the last village of Sugnu constituency and borders the hill areas, many different communities which reside in the area have faced countless hardships due to lack of proper communication by means of road or bridge earlier.

“There have been many instances when patients suffering from major or minor ailments had been stranded on the Serou side as getting medical help at the Sugnu Civil Hospital meant crossing over to the Sugnu side by boat in the absence of a connecting bridge, sadly many lives had been lost due to the incapacity.

But the people of Serou have long cherished the dream of a bridge and finally it is being realized, this is also a dream come true for me, in July the bridge will be finished and the Chief Minister will inaugurate it as per his convenience”, he added.
