Modern college shifting decision draws more flak

IMPHAL, June 15: The coordinating committee of founder members, alumni and the students of the Modern college, Imphal have submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister demanding withdrawal of the recent cabinet decision for shifting of the Modern College to the site of Porompat Police station for the purpose of expanding JNIMS.

The memorandum was submitted by three members of the committee led by Ng Tomba former dy speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Akham Robichandra founder Principal and the chairman of the committee Athokpam Jotinkumar this morning.

The memorandum critically mentioned that the very cabinet decision appear to have an intension to lower the good reputation and prosperity of the College.

Citing that a medical college is a professional college meant for only a few students whereas a general degree college is meant for the whole student community, the memorandum has stated that the importance of the medical college (JNIMS) is not greater than that of the general degree college.

It is also mentioned that, there are twenty eight government college out of which seven colleges, presently, have the strength of students over and above one thousand and that Modern College is one those seven colleges, besides the very college was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in the year 2004 and the college stands to be the first NAAC accredited college in the state of Manipur, the memorandum added.

The memorandum further mentioned that, the University Grants Commission, after due enquiry, with a view to promote and uplift the college to the position of a leading college has granted financial assistance to the college for the construction of hostels for both boys and girls and a library and Audio visual hall.

Now the said buildings are already completed while the girl’s hostel building is under construction.

Further, it is also mentioned that, the college has come to exist with its own land measuring an area of 16.18 acre for the last 48 years at present location.

The memorandum recalls that the Modern college was established in the year 1963 by the founder members including scholars and local enthusiasts and was handed over to the government in the year 1978. The college has been producing numerous imminent alumni and has been contributing in the area of education at large for the last five decades.

It has further appealed the Chief Minister not to expand the area of the JNIMS towards the Modern college and let the college be allowed to remain at its own place in the general interest of the people and future generation.
