Retaining wall collapses; contractor alleges wall constructed without work permit

IMPHAL, June 5: A 15 feet long retaining wall attached to the northern side of the newly constructed Kongba Bridge connecting Nandeibam Leikai and Kongba bazaar on the Nandeibam Leikai side of the river collapsed this evening at around 3:45 pm.According to sources, the retaining wall stretches along the Kongba River which stands about 18 feet tall was likely to be inaugurated on June 15.One of the three contractors engaged with the construction of the work, on conditions of anonymity, stated that the retaining wall was constructed as a part of the Bridge and without any legitimate work order, following instruction from the local MLA to begin the work.While giving his clarification on the collapsed of the wall, the contractor speculated that it could have beendue to lack of depth of the foundation.He also disclosed that the contractors were planning to reconstruct the wall as cracks had already started to developed on the wall a few days back, during filling up of the gap between the wall the river bank.However unfortunately the wall collapsed before it could be mended he added.On the other hand, the local people claimed that they had warned the contractors to stop construction of the work after they had detected various technical flaws in their work and asserted that the contractors did not pay attention to them.Taking serious note of the incident the local populace has also drawn the attention of the government to intervene into the matter at the earliest.It may be mentioned that the incident came in the wake of the survey taken up by the IFCD department regarding the recent collapse of a 25 feet long retaining wall at Takyel Khongbal area, along the Nambul River. The department concerned had also suspended an SO supervising the construction besides announcing to black list the contractor involved as per the outcome of the enquiry instituted in connection with the case.The Takyel United Progressive Organisation, president had also stated that another instance of a retaining wall collapsing was reported on May 10 at the Takyel Khongban Khumanthem Leikai.
