UCM slams hard against cabinet decision to join tri-talk

IMPHAL, June 22: Reiterating its stand on the tripartite talk arrangement between the United Naga Council, the state government and the central government regarding UNC’s so called alternative arrangement demand, the United Committee Manipur (UCM) has today vehemently opposed and condemned Tuesday’s state cabinet decision to send the state chief secretary as its representatives to the talk which is scheduled for June 30.

Speaking to media persons in this regard at its Lamphel office, UCM president Yumnamcha Dilipkumar, while stating that the cabinet decision is against the will of the people, questioned the state government under what condition it is planning to hold talks with groups whose key members were declared wanted by the law.

They (UNC) are criminals in the eye of the law moreover they had already severed all ties with the state government, said the UCM president and as such the government has no right to participate in the talk.

Vehemently opposing the state government’s participation in the proposed talk, and condemning the state cabinet decision, he further alleged that the UNC is a puppet of the NSCM-IM and succumbing to demands of such group is a humiliation for the people of the state.

The UCM president further informed that a memorandum in this regard has been submitted to the Chief Minister of Manipur today.

In the wake of a certain news report published in a Nagaland based daily on June 22 about a warning from a certain “Naga Crusader” to a certain community of Manipur residing in the hill districts of the state to leave on or before July 10 or to face dire consequences, the UCM memorandum has further urged the Chief Minister to immediately appraise the Union home minister about the prevailing volatile situation in Manipur, for canceling the proposed tripartite talk to be held on June 30.

It mentioned that the state government should take up immediate measures to protect the life and property of the people of Manipur, so as to enable the law and order in the state.

The government of Manipur should not succumbed to the dictate of UNC who are taking undue advantage of the Naga appeasement policy of the government of India and goodwill of the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh to go the extra mile to solve Naga issues, it said.

It further stated that the cabinet decision of June 21 for participating in the ensuing tripartite talk at Senapati is insulting and humiliating to the sentiments of the people of Manipur.

The memorandum has further urged the state government to take all precautionary measures to maintain peaceful co-existence amongst the indigenous people of Manipur, and has also asked the Chief Minister to take the matter as most urgent and intimate the UCM of its decision so as to diffuse the volatile situation within 24 hours.
