IMPHAL, July 26: Kuki Students’ Organization, general headquarters (KSO-GHQ) while lauding the introduction of common eligibility test in teachers’ recruitment, observed that the high cut off mark of 50 percent is “preposterous”.
Manipur cabinet recently passed a legislature requiring aspiring teachers in the state to sit through a common eligibility test (CET), 50 percent being a minimum cut off percentage of mark for them to be eligible to sit for the test.
The cabinet decision to incorporate common eligibility test may be a step forward to usher in quality education in government schools across the state, but upholding a 50 percent mark criterion is preposterous, said a KSO general headquarters statement signed by its vice president Mangcha Baite Tuesday.
While the students’ body has welcome Manipur government’s initiative for quality education, it has expressed strong reservation on the implementation of the new recruitment process given the absence of uniformity in awarding marks from university to university.
Adopting a 50 percent cut off would be discriminatory against a large number of candidates who do not possess the required percentage as only few candidates would be entitled for the eligibility test, the statement said.
The students’ body also maintained that there is also a chance of putting students hailing from poor educational background at a disadvantaged position, especially tribal students with lower percentage mark compare to their counterparts from good institutes.
While urging the authority to reconsider the 50 percent cut off, KSO stated that if the government is resolute over the eligibility test then it should allow intending candidates to take the test without the burden of the high cut off mark in order that the introduction of eligibility test in the recruitment process is well justified.
