IMPHAL, July 16: Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has announced that classes for the first batch of the state’s National Institute of Technology will begin at Government Polytechnic at Takyelpat from August this year as the institute’s complex at Lamphel Pat is not ready.
Ibobi stated that the decision to launch the session from this year without any delay was taken keeping in view the expectations of the general public. He also emitted confidence that from the next session, classes will surely shifted to the institute’s site at Lamphel Pat.
He made the announcement during an inspection of NIT complex this morning to have a personal assessment of the progress of work accompanied by ministers K Ranjit and DD Thaisii along with a horde of officials.
Although the realization that the state of infrastructural development was too far behind to be used for service was hard to swallow for the chief minister, he, nevertheless, interacted with the engineers of the state Public Works Department, the implementing agency, and encouraged them to work expeditiously so that the remaining portion is completed ahead of time before the next session.
However, he lauded the accomplishment achieved by the engineers of the department in short span of time since work on the site was undertaken. According to reports, the administrative block, quarters for teaching and non-teaching staff and students’ hostels are almost completed. The PWD had undertaken the NIT project, which is being implemented under the PM Package, from 2009.
Ibobi also visited the building at Government Polytechnic where the NIT will be functioning temporarily for at least one. He inspected the existing infrastructures there and held discussions with officials on ways for its enhancement and installation of necessary components to meet the general standard.
