Accused confessed to killing Sunil, say family members

IMPHAL July 11: The controversial death of Asem Sunil, 29, of Langdum Manning leikai received a major turnaround with the prime accused Aribam Naobi Sharma, 22, allegedly confessing to his crime and the discovery of the suspected weapon used to perpetrated the crime.

Sunil was found dead on the night of June 15 on the Imphal-Yairipok Road in Imphal east district under suspicious circumstances. Initially, Naobi who hails from Kongba Uchekon Khunau claimed that Asem Sunil had succumbed to his injury in a mishap and they had no involvement in his death.

However family members of Sunil have claimed that Naobi has now confessed that the victim was hit by a blunt object on his head and later succumb to his injury.

It may be mentioned here that on the night of the incident Naobi’s wife A (o) Abe was hit  from behind by the bike  Sunil was driving. Naobi and his wife along with some of their friends were reportedly walking on the side of the road towards Bamon Kampu cinema hall.  A case was filed against A. Naobi, his wife and some of his associates some time later in connection with the incident after suspicions grew from their statements published in some local dailies and from the alleged indifferent attitude of the then I.O. of Irilbung P.S.  Lukhoi.

Meanwhile, the prime accused A. Naobi Sharma was produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate 1st class Imphal east at Lamphel today and was remanded to 15 more days in custody till July 25 for further investigation. An application file by the accused seeking bail was also rejected as there has been seizure of crime weapon used by the accused in perpetrating the crime.
