ATDUM threatens to shut down social welfare offices

IMPHAL July 30:  Starting from August 1, an indefinite shut down or closed down of district social welfare offices located in the five hill districts of the state have been called by the All Tribal Disables’ Union Manipur and its fraternity units.

The indefinite shut down is a result of the non adherence by the government towards the welfare of the physically challenged persons from the hill districts of the state.

A press conference was held in this connection at the office of All Tribal Disabilities’ Union, Manipur (ATDUM) located in Nagaram.

Momo Tantanga, president of the ATDUM lamented that several appeal for the expansion of state medical board for issuing disability certificates at district level submitted to the concerned department of the government went to deaf ears.

He said that the lone disability certificate issuing board of the state situated at JNIMS in Imphal needs to be expanded to each districts of the state for the convenience of the people as many persons with physically challenged are deprived of their rights.

He added that people residing in Chandel Senapati, Churachandpur, Tamenglong and Ukhrul are severely facing acute problems in getting the certificate.  A meeting was held at the office of ATDUM in Nagaram on July 28 along with other fraternity units from Chandel, Churachandpur,Tamenglong Senapati and Ukhrul districts over the attitude of government even after repeated plight, he said. He added that the indefinite closure of district social welfare offices located in hill districts was decided during the meeting.
