Couple gunned down in Ukl

IMPHAL, July 25: Some armed miscreants gunned down a couple of Lungphu village located about 70 km from Phungyar Police Station, Ukhrul district late last night.

The victims were identified as Vareingam Mahung, 35, s/o Wungkhei (husband) and Ngaharla, 33, (wife).

The victims are survived by three children including two sons of 6 and 5 years old, and a 2 year old daughter.

Variengam is said to be a teacher at a local school while his wife a helper of an Anganwadi.

According to reports the incident occurred around 10:10 pm last night when armed miscreants in full combat fatigue bearing sophisticated weapons including small arms came knocking at the door of the victims’ residence calling Vareingam’s name.

The report further quoting witnesses informed that on failing to response to the call the assailant knocked down the door.

Vareingam, who was alerted by the loud bang of breaking down the door, rush out from his bed when he was fired upon by the assailants. The gun shots provoked his wife to follow him but landing her in the similar fate of her husband, killing them on the spot.

The report further said that Ngaharla’s sister, LC. Rose, 26, w/o Jingnara, whose residence is located at about 60 metres away from victims’ house, terrified with the sounds of the multiple gun shots screamed when the armed miscreant fired a round at her residence but the bullet luckily strayed.

Vreingam sustained multiple bullet injuries at his head chest and hands while Ngaharla sustained a bullet injury at her forehead, adds the reports.

On receiving the report the SPDO and OC Phungyar Police station rushed to the spot early morning today. The police recovered 7 fired cases of AK-47 Rifle and 9 mm ammunitions.

The motive and perpetrators behind the killing is yet to be ascertained as no individuals or organization claimed responsible so far.

Meanwhile, the Police concerned has lodge a case against the incident.
