Cycle club holds critical mass

IMPHAL July 31: Demanding establishment of bicycle lanes within city limits and propagating a greener environment, the Manipur Cycle Club held its Fourth Critical Mass today.

The Critical Mass, a gathering of cycle enthusiasts at a particular place and conducts a cycle ride around city areas started at DM college of science today at around 2.30 pm.

The cyclist passed along Khuyathong road, Kanglapat, Moirangkhom and later concluded at Singjamei Lima road basketball ground.

An accident occurred during the critical mass when a rider accidentally veered from the roadside towards the median. A speeding diesel auto also turned turtle while trying to brake. The incident took place near Pishum Lairembi Lampak at around 4 pm.

The MCC rider James and another woman passenger of the overturned vehicle were taken to RIMS hospital for medical treatment. The woman suffered a broken wrist.

Talking to IFP during the sidelines of the cycle rally, Anita Sougaijam, a member  of MCC said that the club has been set up to create awareness to the public. “We want to propagate a healthy lifestyle, towards a pollution freer environment. The state government should initiate measures to establish cycle lanes in the major lanes of the city. There is nothing to lose from any quarters whatsoever,” she said.

The residents of Singjamei Liwa Road were enthralled by the BMX stunts performed by the young MCC members at Liwa road basketball ground today. 

Veteran journalist Yambem Laba also addressed the MCC youths that road safety rules need to be followed by the cyclists.
