IMPHAL, July 14: Despite agriculture minister Ph Parijat’s assurance that there is no immediate threat of a fertilizer crisis in the state, farmers of Charangpat in Thoubal district burnt his effigies for his failure to implement the provision of fertilizers at government subsidized rates.
The farmers have also announced the possibility of shifting into the agitation mode if the government does not move fast and fulfill its promises of availing fertilizers at slashed price of Rs. 520 per 50 kg bag. Likewise, the farmers of some localities of Lamsang Lairenkabi had threatened to launch a stir over the same issue some days back.
Speaking to media persons today, a lady farmer expressed unhappiness that the poor farmers of Charangpat were left with no other options but to procure the fertilizers at much higher prices as the government seemed to have renegade on its promise.
She alleged that it was an act of deceit by the agriculture minister on the farmers and demanded that he step down.
She also urged the authorities concerned to investigate the confusion over the delay in distribution of subsidized fertilizers and help rectify any related irregularities in the agriculture department.
On the other hand, the Manipur Loumi Lup of Konthoujam Kendra Area Committee lauded the agriculture minister and other officials of the department for making the much needed fertilizers available to farmers under Konthoujam assembly constituency in a press release.
