Let separate board hold teacher eligibility test: DESAM

IMPHAL, July 30: While lauding the state government for introducing the teacher eligibility test in the state, the Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has demanded the authorities concerned to set up a separate service board for conducting the eligibility test.

Addressing media persons today, the general secretary of DESAM stated that the Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BSEM) should not be entrusted to conduct the eligibility test as the primary task of the board is to ensure availability of text books and conduct high school leaving certificate examination in time. The students’ body would prefer a separate service board to conduct the test rather than the BSEM which is inefficient to hold various recruitment examinations.

He further asserted that the qualifying mark for the teachers, according to the notification of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), has been fixed at 60 percent for all candidates regardless of the categories. However, the state government has framed different qualifying marks based on the category of the candidates.

The general secretary further demanded the authorities concerned to make a clear statement on the eligibility criteria of the candidates. It has also been found out that the minimum qualification for appearing at the teacher eligibility test is graduation in any field. But the NCTE demands graduation either in arts or science for a candidate to be eligible for teaching Class VI to VIII, he stated.

There are lots of irregularities in the eligibility test and the students’ body would not allow the BSEM to conduct the test until and unless the irregularities are rectified by the authorities concerned, Angamba stated.

  1. Societies like DESAM should not interfere in the rules and qualifying criteria’s set down by the Government.  It is done with all good intentions.  Percentages does not at all time determine the capabilities and expertise of a teacher.  ” It is extremely gratifying to know that DESAM knows many aspiring Teacher in the HILL districts don’t have 60%

  2. Who gives DESAM the authority to say 60% should be the eligibility criteria for TET GOM.  Does it mean only people with high percentage have the right skills sets to teach.  Does it also mean that valley folks who have higher percentages should be given all the post.  Greed is a child’s game DESAM.  Equal opportunity for employment is something the GOI formulated to make sure different people of diverse economic background get the right to participate in growth and prosperity.  For those who want to perticipate in 60% go for NTET. YOu have the taste and smell of a manipulator DESAM
