Locals block inter-village road against government apathy

IMPHAL, July 18: A 15 km stretch inter village road connecting Lamsang to Sekmai, locally known as spinning mill road, has been blocked by villagers living in and around the road stretch in protest against the government’s apathy since early morning today.

The villagers have barred all forms of vehicles which included passengers’ vehicles from plying along the route.

The aggrieved villagers were compelled to take up the protest owing to the failure of the representatives of Sekmai and Lamsang MLA to intervene into the repeated hue and cry of the villagers residing along the route who have been demanding repairing of the road, sources said.

The sources said that local populace of Mayang Langjing, Akham and Phumlou have been relentlessly drawing the attention of the government and local MLAs concerned to take up measures to develop the 15 km stretch which till today has been lying in deplorable condition.

It has been informed that the road has been lying unattended since it was first constructed 20 years back.

Amidst the boiling situation an RCC bridge also collapsed on the night of July 14 near the Mayang Langjng high school and has remained unattended by the officials concerned provoking the aggrieved local populace to take their own course of protest, added the source.

The agitating villagers today came out in the street and started barring entry to all forms of vehicles since early morning today as a mark of protest against the inability of the government to maintain the road, said the source.
