Meet on drug abuse held

IMPHAL, July 22: A one-day district level convention on awareness and education for prevention of drug abuse and alcoholism in Thoubal district was held at the Kshetri Shanglen, Thoubal today with 103 participants.

M.V. Atau Rahaman, adhyaksha, Thoubal Zila Parishad, who was the chief guest of the convention openly appealed to the PRI members, youth leaders, parents, teachers, religious leaders, NGO activists and the student community to join hands and co-operate with the Nehru Yuva Kendra, Thoubal in the implementation of the project which is supported by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. 

In his keynote address, Y. Laksman Singh, DYC highlighted the proposed activities of the project  which will be implemented in 60 selected villages of Thoubal and Kakching blocks. A baseline survey will be conducted in all the selected villages and 6000 people will be involved in the survey followed by training, education and awareness among the youths and students community.

Dr. Ksh. Manglem Singh, retd. Chief Medical Officer and the Nonibala Yengkhom, State Project Officer of NYKS were the resource persons. A group discussion on the role of the youth, students, NGO, PRI members, teachers, parents, religious leaders in the prevention of drug abuse and alcoholism were held. The reports of the group discussion were presented by the group leaders.

Jackie Ruivah, Zonal Director, NYKS in her presidential address to the youths spoke on ‘Prevention of Drug Abuse Begins with Me”. She appreciated the efforts made by NYK Thoubal while implementing the project for benefit of the youth and the people especially in the rural areas of the district. The day long Convention was ended with a vote of thanks from K. Lokendron Singh, member DACYP, NYK Thoubal.
