IMPHAL July 7: Students of class X and XII, of Imphal west district, who scored 80 percent and above in the HSLC and HSSLC, 2011 conducted by the BOEM and COHSEM respectively received meritorious awards in a function organized by the Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) this morning during a simple function organized at the Mayang Imphal marriage hall.

Social worker K. Manglem Singh, DESAM president L.C. Santosh, president Senior Citizens’ forum C. Naron Singh and councilor ward no.1 Mayang Imphal L. Memcha attended the function as the chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.

The main highlights of the event were speeches from guardians of the meritorious students and dignitaries.

Speaking at the function, L C Santosh expressed the regret over the paradigm shift of education trend in Manipur. He regretted the over dependence on private and extra-tuition by the students, which has now become a culture in the state.

He also added that the parents have now developed a perception that tuitions are indispensable for their wards to get good marks in their exams, and this culture has created distraction to the other poor students who cannot afford to take private tuition.

During the function, K. Tamphaibema of Leikinthabi Makha leikai, who bagged the second position in HSLC exam scoring 96 percent, also shared her experience with the gathering.

She opined that the students of the state should aim high and work harder, to become the best of what they can, working by the dictum, ‘shoot for the moon and you might land on among the stars’.

Meanwhile it may be added that the Imphal west district council, Desam has taken the initiative to organize such an event for the first time in the district.
