MGNREGS beneficiaries raise complaint

IMPHAL, July 23: The job card holders of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Generation Scheme (MGNREGS) under Khurai Kongpal Laishram Leikai Gram Panchayat have raised complaint against the Pradhan and members for failing to ensure maximum number of working days.

Addressing media persons at Khurai Kongpal today, one card holder stated that the beneficiaries have been deprived of their actual working days. They are made to work only for seven days in a month as against the 14 days prescribed in the laws of MGNREGS.

Social activist Sushindro stated that the elected local representatives have deprived the benefits of the job card holders and so he would urge the authorities to take punitive action against the representatives.

The beneficiaries demanded the authorities concerned to look into such discrepancy in the implementation of the scheme which guarantees 100-day job for the unemployed persons in rural areas.

On the other hand, a member of Khurai Kongpal Gram Panchayat, Sobita clarified that the fund for MGNREGS has been fixed by the central government and the scheme is meant for the people from the age of 18 to 60 years. However, enrolment of a large of beneficiaries including those under the age of 18 years and above 60 years has led to the decrease in the number of working days.
