NPF meet held

IMPHAL, July 8(Newmai News Network): The Naga People’s Front (NPF) on Thursday in its public meeting in Tamenglong district sang swansong for Congress party and expressed optimism in filling the political vacuum in the wake of the “imminent” demise of the deeply fissured national party.

Due to internal squabble within the party, Manipur Congress will not be able to regain its power in the forthcoming general election, said NPF Manipur unit president G Gaingam and added that his party will attempt at forging an alternative coalition government next year even as the demise of Congress is imminent.

The party has a winning chance in all the 11 assembly constituencies of the four Naga dominated hill districts of Manipur, Gaingam stated.

Besides that, NPF has also decided to contest from Kangpokpi, Saitu, Saikul and Henglep assembly constituencies where the party will work hard to garner support, the NPF president said.

NPF has recently opened its Manipur chapter on May 28 with an eye on the upcoming general election in Manipur slated for early next year.

Speaking at Nungba headquarters of Tamenglong district under a politically expedient slogan “by faith not by arms”, Gaingam said although India is the biggest democracy in the world and cultivates a variegated and strong homegrown political parties, they are just not amenable to the complexities of Northeast states. “What benefit will possibly accrue when they (national parties) rule from distant New Delhi?”, Gaingam asked.

NPF knows the pulse of the people and all the problems that beset Northeast states such as Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram etc. besides being familiar with their rights, aspirations and tradition, he added.

Nagaland was ruled by the Congress for over thirty years but the people of that state did not benefit anything, said NPF Manipur president adding that within a short span NPF has done for Nagaland a great deal more than what the Congress has managed in over thirty years.

Political parties of Manipur pulled all stops in opposing the launching of NPF in Manipur at Senapati on May 28, but since the party is recognized by Election Commission of India (ECI) the launching could not be prevented, Gaingam said in his presidential address at the public meeting at Nungba.

Speaking on the same occasion, the spokesperson of NPF Manipur unit Somi Keishing said that the party has been introduced in the state to safeguard tribal rights particularly of the Nagas, and added that NPF is not a communal political party as has been made out to be by some sections of the society in the state.

Other Naga leaders present at the meeting are: BD Behring, ex-MLA, ex-MP; Athuan Abonmei, social worker; Paulrhing Langhu, president, Chandel NPF; K Adahrii, president, Senapati NPF; David Shimray, president, Ukhrul NPF; Solomon, working committee president etc. With strong participation hundreds of Nagas from all walks of life, slogan like “long live NPF” rant the air at the end of the meeting, perhaps as a precursor to the upcoming general election due early next year.
