Plying on NH 2 continued after prolonged land slide

IMPHAL July 28: Road links to Manipur which remained cut off from the rest of the country since the last three days following heavy landslide at both the National Highways of the land locked state, has been re-opened after hectic reconstruction works at Maram today.

However rebuilding of the road at the landslide prone Maram bazaar stretch of Imphal-Dimapur sector of the National Highway 2 (formerly known as NH 39) in the state’s northern district of Senapati would take some more sometime.

Drawing the attention of the state Chief Minister O Ibobi over the frequent landslide at Maram area, Tadubi MLA and a resident of Maram bazaar K Raina said, “The authority should take care of the maintenance works of the highway besides rebuilding the road quality. Otherwise we may face similar situation every monsoon season.”

The MLA has also visited the landslide prone Maram area on Thursday and interacted with the state public works officials who had been camping there for reconstruction works with 2 JCBs, 4 trucks and more than a dozen labourers.

With the opening of the state’s life line, almost all the 300 stranded goods laden trucks have left for their respective destinations in the afternoon.

Even after the road was opened for the truckers or goods carriers, more than 4000 residents of Maram bazaar, a small hill town located on the highway which is about 84 km north of here, have been facing scarcity of potable water after the landslide buried their pipelines.

“We’ve been buying water at the rate of Rs 20 per tin (40 litre capacity container) for our daily use since the last three weeks”,Kunjeshwori,a fish vendor at Maram Bazar said. The Maram bazaar board chairman Thomas also shared a similar sentiment

In another issue, concerned BRO officials working along the NH 53 told IFP that the present works along the highway will be completed by 2013. An official source said that the road stretch from Imphal to Barak valley will be handed over to the state Public Works Department and the further stretch will be undertaken by the BRO. A meeting is scheduled to be held on July 31 which will be attended by the Chief Minister, officials from the centre, BRO officials, PWD officials and other state authorities.

He mentioned that the deplorable road conditions along the NH 53 is also caused by the heavy traffic along the said highway during the recent economic blockade imposed along the NH 39.The weather is also another cause for delay as landslides are a common occurence and work progress is greatly hindered.
