Police crack down child labour racket

IMPHAL, July 27: A team of Imphal East police led by Porompat OC K Gitchandra busted a child labour racket at Mahabali area in Imphal East district yesterday.

Acting upon a complaint filed by Child Welfare Committee of Imphal West, the police team arrested three non-locals including two women, namely Nandu Ved, 35, s/o Pecha, Tamatar, 35, w/o Nandu, and Kamakhya, 33. All three arrested are from Jalpaiguri, West Bengal.

Addressing media persons at his office chamber today, OC Gitchandra stated that the arrested persons have brought eight children from West Bengal including two children of Nandu Ved. The children were made to work as domestic help in hotels and nearby households. Some of them were even forced to beg from the people or work as scavengers.

They were involved in such cases earlier. The police are working closely to check violation of child rights such as child labour in the state, asserted the police officer.

The arrested persons were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East today and they were further remanded to judicial custody for 15 days.

Out of the eight rescued children, four have been placed under the custody of CWC Imphal West while two children were handed over to their relatives.
