Use of solar energy mooted at MANIREDA workshop

IMPHAL, July 1: A one-day workshop on solar thermal system was organized by Manipur Renewable Energy Development Agency (MANIREDA) today at the conference hall of Hotel Classic, North AOC, Imphal.

The inaugural session of the workshop was graced by health and family welfare minister, L Jayentakumar, science and technology commissioner, H Imocha, director of MNRE (NE Region), Dr DR Das, under secretary of MNRE, Prem Chand, and senior scientist of MNRE, Anand Narwani, as the chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.

Addressing the gathering at the workshop, health minister Jayentakumar stressed on the use of solar energy as an effective approach to solve the power crisis.

He underscored the importance of using renewable energy like solar energy in hospitals and other vital institutions where power is a must for proper functioning.

The minister contended that the right to life should also include the right to have energy which is a basic necessity for survival. The recent installation of 200 KW solar power plant at Moreh Hospital is a new step towards using more greener and effective energy, Jayentakumar added.

The director of MANIREDA, L Manglem stated that harnessing renewable energy like solar and wind energy will help to solve power crisis in the near future. The workshop is to sensitize the people on use of solar water heaters which will be given to the public at a subsidized rate of about 25 percent of the actual cost, he noted.

T Anant, CEO of Neutech Solar System, Bangalore, spoke precisely on the working principle, installation and maintenance of solar water heating system.

He said that solar water heaters will work for more than 20 years and the cost of the heater will be recurred during the first two years of installation as no other power source is required for the system.
