IMPHAL, Aug 27: Over 500 freight trucks including oil tankers and LPG carriers began to arrive here today from Jiribam (Assam-Manipur border) under heavy security cover amidst agitation and counter agitation by Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC) and United Naga Council (UNC) respectively over the demand for a full fledged Sadar Hills district.

Meanwhile, a school and a vehicle were set ablaze at two different places late last night by suspected volunteers of SHDDC and UNC.

Over 500 freight trucks including oil tankers and LPG carriers began arriving Imphal since late afternoon today under heavy security cover through national highway 53 without any disruption by the agitators, said a police source.

Even as this news is being written, the convoy of goods trucks kept arriving in the capital city.

National highways 39 and 53, both passing through Sadar Hills autonomous district council, have been shut by SHDDC since midnight July 31 demanding a full fledged Sadar Hills district.

The Nagas under the aegis of UNC started a counter agitation on national highways 39, 53 and 150 from August 21 in an attempt to protect “Naga land” from going into Sadar Hills district in the event of the demand being granted by the state government.

The impasse over the demand continues to make life difficult across the state with prices of essential commodities rising exponentially every passing day.

In the meanwhile, suspected volunteers of SHDDC razed a UJB school in Kangchup Chiru yesterday at about 9:30 pm. The school is located in the contiguous Sadar Hills autonomous district council.

Suspected volunteers of UNC also set a Tata DI (MN01W 9550) of fire yesterday at about 11 pm in Wakhong Khul, 7 km from Senapati police station. The vehicle was said to have come from Mao gate and approaching Senapati district headquarter before coming under the attack of arsonists.
