IMPHAL August 2: As a goodwill gesture to the distress of the farmers affected by recent flood, the college of Agriculture, CAU Imphal distributed ready paddy seed to various farmers of the state, today.
A distribution function was held at the campus of the University located at Lamsang.
Lamyanba Irabot, a type of high yielding paddy variety seeds were distributed to farmers from flood affected areas of Koirengei, Nambol and Thoubal.
N. Iboton, Dean of the University told the gathering today that the distribution programme was carried out from the limited resource of the university. Out of the numerous distressed farmers, the university had selected 80 such farmers from their adopted villages and initiated the goodwill gesture.
Each 80 farmers were given 15 kg of the high yielding paddy seeds.
The vice chancellor of CAU Imphal S. N. Puri handed over the paddy seeds to the farmers during the function today.
Puri, while giving his speech, said that the university has been responding with whatever limited resources is available with the university, for the welfare of distress farmers of the state under its extended programme. He stated that since the past 2/3 years under the guidance of Dr. N. Iboton Sing dean of the college of agriculture and Dr. Joykumar, the college has been trying to produce varieties of seeds that could be made available to the farmers. He added that yellow mustard seeds will also be given to another 100 such farmers in the coming days.
In the mean time, lauding the university for providing commendable services both for academic and for the benefits of the farmers of the state, he disclosed that the CAU Imphal is ranked second amongst all India agricultural universities.
The distribution of paddy seed function that was held today was also attended by other officials of the university.
