Chandel people protest against EU-India free trade agreement

IMPHAL, Aug 22: Various social organizations held sit-in-protest against European Union-India free trade agreement at Zaphou in Chandel district today.

Speaking to media persons, president of NGOs Forum Chandel, PS Ngamnung Anal stated that the natural resources of the state will be exploited if the free trade agreement is put into action. The organizations want the agreement to be tabled and debated in the parliament.

The authorities concerned should have consulted the indigenous people before the agreement is put into action, the president averred.

The organizations including Widow Welfare Society, Christian Society Development Organization and Chamdil Khubul Social Welfare Art and Culture have submitted memorandums to Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh and Opposition Leader Sushma Swaraj to have a thorough discussion on the ill impacts of EU-India free trade agreement at the Parliament before it is enacted.
