Dead driver`s JAC maintains driver killed in blockade violence, demands action

IMPHAL, August 14: A Joint Action Committee was formed today against the killing of Md. Rahman, 35, s/o Mufi of Keirao Mayai Leikai, who succumbed to injuries after being allegedly assaulted by agitators along the National Highway-37 (formerly known as NH-53).

The committee under the banner “JAC against the brutal killing of Md. Rahman by Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee” was formed at Keirao Makting Leikai during a mass public sit in protest demonstration.

Talking to media persons, the JAC has urged the government to provide the victim’s family with adequate ex-gratia and a suitable government job to the victim’s next of kin.

It further demanded the government to book the culprits involved in the alleged assault and punish them as per law within seven days time with effect from today.

Failing to meet the demand on the stipulated time, it has warned to launch various forms of agitation.   

Placards which read, “Save drivers’ lives”, “we condemned the killing of driver”, “killing of drivers is not a solution” etc were displayed during the sit in protest.

Meanwhile, the charter of demands was submitted to the Chief Minister in the formed of a memorandum later in the evening.

It may be recalled that Md. Rehman reportedly sustained injuries in an accident along the NH-37 during attacks from suspected SHDDC supporters.

The transporter’s union has alleged that the victim succumbed to his injury he recieved during severe assault meted out by the supporters of the demand for a separate Sadar Hills district.
