Drugs worth Rs four lakh seized

IMPHAL August 28: A team of Imphal East police today seized huge quantities of contraband narcotics worth around Rs four lakhs concealed in a goods truck coming from Jiribam sub division.

Three gunny bags full of prescription drugs and four cases liquor were seized from a truck bearing registration no. NL 01A 9772 which was driven by one Thyam  Naoba Meitei, 22, s/o Th. Biren Meitei of Tera Khongsangbi Mamang Leikai.

During a press conference held in this connection at Imphal east P.S. the seized items were displayed along with the driver to the media persons. Unaccounted numbers of Spasmo Proxyvon strip filled in two gunny sacks alongwith numerous N-10 and Relipen prescription drugs were stashed together in another gunny sack. The seized items also included 4 cases of foreign made Indian liquours.

Addressing the conference, Th. Ibomcha Singh, Inspector Imphal east, O.C. Narcotics stated since yesterday after getting specific information from reliable source of some suspicious narcotics items being transported in a goods truck heading from Jiribam, a team of Imphal east police under the leadership of L. Birbabu, Additional S.P. I/E had     been positioned at various locations on the stretch of the National highway lying around Patsoi area waiting for the said truck till late in the evening. However this afternoon after much anticipation they spotted the truck nearby Langjing Oil pump and scouted the truck to establish some lead. After the truck reached Imphal bazaar the team apprehensive of being eluded by the driver of the truck by taking the advantage of congested nature of the road at that time approached the driver and escorted towards Sanjenthong. On reaching the spot the team frisked the vehicle and later found out the contrabands concealed among cement bags.

The vehicle along with the driver was taken under the custody and is currently lodged at Imphal east P.S.

Ibomcha added that on verification the driver maintained that one Muhammad Naha, 44, from Kokta ward no.3 who is said to be known to the driver had approached the later and promised him to pay for carrying the contrabands, while the driver was   loading goods at Fulton located in Assam. The said person assured him that the former would take the contrabands from the site where the cements were to be unloaded, which is said to be at Moirang and there the transportation charges would be paid.

Elated at this juncture Th. Ibomcha Singh asserted that with the help of his team they had successful averted a major obstacle which could have degrade the foundation of our society. If not timely initiated efforts of the teams, the drugs could have been landed to wrong hands, he added.
