Petrol scarcity in state affects judicial proceedings

IMPHAL August 17: As fallout of the imposed economic blockade along both National Highways by the Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee, petrol and cooking gas is presently unavailable in the state.

The status quo has affected the state judiciary, as lawyers of the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) will not attend proceedings of the Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench from Thursday onwards.

Briefing media persons in the regard at the GHC complex today, senior advocate and president of the HCBA, N Kumarjit Singh said that the association deliberated on the complaints made by its members that due to fuel scarcity, the lawyers have difficulty in attending court.

In the regard, the association’s secretary made a representation to the consumer affairs commissioner yesterday to provide 5000 litres of petrol for distribution to the members practicing at the Gauhati HighCourt, Imphal Bench.

It was informed to the lawyers that the situation could not be resolved for some days by the concerned.

After deliberation it was unanimously resolved that for want of petrol and diesel, the members of the Bar cannot attend and assist the functioning’s of the court from tomorrow onwards.

The situation would also be appraised to the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court as well as to the judges of the Imphal Bench. The members will meet again on August 23 to discuss the future course of action including shortage of essential items in the state. Kumarjit appealed to the public litigants to bear the inconveniences caused.
