Sadar Hills team meets home minister appeals for verbal intervention

IMPHAL, August 18: The Sadar hills delegation camping at the national capital today met  union home minister P. Chidambaram and submitted a memorandum drawing his intervention and to give appropriate direction to the state government of Manipur for immediate implementation of Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Council Act, 1971 and to upgrade Sadar Hills into a full fledged district like all other districts of the hills in Manipur.

The delegates led by the Sadar hills districthood demand committee along with elected MLAs, MDC, social and political leaders, met the home minister from 4:45 pm this evening and lasted till 5:15 pm, said the SHDDC secretary.

During the short meet, the committee also drew the attention of the home minister to intervene into the matter verbally also, he asserted.

He further informed that the committee will have another meeting with the home minister in a few days time during which it will submit further information related to Sadar Hills area.

Notably, the committee in the memorandum reiterated the failure of the successive governments to implement Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Council Act, 1971, in letter and spirit in the case of Sadar hill and upgrade it into a full fledged district.

It maintained that despite the failure, the Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council had been functioning like other district councils of Manipur under the same Act on equal status.

None fulfillment of this aspiration has deprived the people of Sadar Hills from enjoying the facilities and benefits of a district as enjoyed by others, be they in micro planning or taking up any development works, further mentioned the memorandum.
