Works minister calls for people`s cooperation in Chakpi multipurpose project

IMPHAL, Aug 10: Works Minister K Ranjit has appealed to the public to render their utmost support to the state government while taking up the Chakpi multipurpose project on Chakpi River under Sugnu assembly constituency with an estimated cost of Rs. 800 crores.

Replying to a query raised by media persons at the sideline of distribution of relief materials to the flood affected people of Sugnu assembly constituency today, K Ranjit stated that some organizations belonging to Anal tribe have resisted the survey works of Geological Survey of India for the implementation of Chakpi project. The project would help the state in terms of flood control, irrigation and supply of potable water, he noted.

The state government is ready to drop the project if the disadvantages are more as the government has taken up the project with the objective of giving utmost benefits to the people, he averred.

Ranjit also announced that another long term project would be taken up under the Brahmaputra Board at an estimated cost of Rs. seven crores for strengthening the embankments of major rivers in Thoubal district. The detailed project report for the said project has been sent to the authorities concerned and it would be implemented in due course of time, he asserted.

Ranjit distributed relief materials comprising of 10 kilograms of rice, dal, edible oil and salt to every flood affected household of Sugnu assembly constituency.

Large areas of Khongyam, Tanjeng, Chairel, Sugnu and Serou under Sugnu assembly constituency have been flooded for the second time due to rise in the water level of Chakpi River and Manipur River.

Relief camps have been opened at various areas for sheltering the flood affected people.

Meanwhile, the officials of IFCD and local volunteers have mended the embankments of Imphal River near Tanjeng whereby preventing a massive flood in major areas of Sugnu assembly constituency.
