IMPHAL Sept 7: 29 underground cadres from eight different outfits surrendered today in a simple function held at the headquarters of Red Shield Division, Leimakhong.
The surrender programme was graced by the GOC of 57 Mountain Division, Major Gen Binoy Poonnem, ADGP (law and order) V Jathang, Brigadier KB Chand, deputy GOC, 57 Mountain Division, commander of 73 Mountain Division, commander of 27 Sector AR and deputy commander of 44 Mountain Brigade.
The surrendered militants included seven cadres of NSCN (Khole), six cadres of NSCN (K), seven cadres of FNG, three cadres of PULF, two cadres each of UNLF and NNC and one each of NSCN (IM) and KYKL.
The cadres of NSCN (K) were identified as S/s Sgt. Maj. RK. Gaikhuamlung, 24, alias Alex from Laisong village, S/s Pvt Ngualiabe Nguame, 17, from Thingje village, S/s Pvt. Igaineing Newme,21, Laisong village, S/s Pvt. Pohoto Sema alias Saunhaunto Sema,37, Bokajan, Balipathar,S/s Pvt. Ebenezer Newme, 18 all residents of Dima Hasao dist. of Assam, and S/s Sgt. Maj. Rangmai, 32, Ndunglo,PO & PS Haflong NC Hills.
S/s Cpl Mohd Abdul Malik alias Aboy alias Laingamba,19, from Phugakchao Hiebong Yangbi Maning Liekai, Imphal, S/s Cpl. Mohd Hibjur Rehman alias Aboy alias Pangalanganba, 24, from Sangai Yampham part II Cherapur Lamding Mathak Leikai, Thoubal, S/s Cpl. Aribam Sherik Khan alias Ithem, 23, Sangai Yumpham Meirel Khul Thoubal belonged to PULF.
S/s 2/Lt. Oinam Guneshwor alias Chairenllakpa , 32, Thanga Chingkha Maning Leikai, S/s Pvt. Tongbram Mitlang alias Babuthoi, 29, Nongmaikhong Makha Keikai, Thoubal of UNLF.
S/s Chemong, 20, Vui, PO & PS Tuensang, Nagaland, S/s Cpl. Liang Padongshiv, 20, Tahonoknyu,Tuensang, Nagaland of NNC.S/s Pvt. K. Robin Chirr, 25, Zanger, Kipihiri, Nagaland of NSCN(IM) and S/s Cpl. Moirang Ravi alias Tatol, 30, Irengbam Awang Leikai Bishenpur of KYKL.
The arms and ammunitions that were handed over during the ceremony included 12 nos. 9mm pistol along with 8 rounds of ammunition,4 nos. of 7.65 pistol with 5 rounds ,2 nos. each of AK-47 Rifles with 95 rounds, AK-56 Rifles with 328 rounds, 9mm Carbine and 303 Rifle with 47 rounds, and 1no. each M-16 Rifle with 159 rounds, M-22 Rifle, 7.62 mm Rifle with 2 rounds and Lathode Grenade Launcher.
Speaking on the occasion, GOC Binoy Poonnen praised them for their courage and wisdom in choosing to become responsible citizens of the state and contribute to progressive realization of the people’s peace aspiration. He assured them of all assistance in their rehabilitation process. He reiterated that the security forces on their part would continue to encourage all such endeavors by all insurgent groups, both collectively and individually and shall continue to act as a facilitator in their rehabilitation and thence in their emergence as responsible citizens of the state.
V. Jathang welcomed them into the national stream and on behalf of the government assured them and their families an honorable rehabilitation. An important aspect of the ceremony was a commitment given by a very senior functionary of United Tribal Liberation Army (UTLA) about their decision to suspend operations with a view to join the national mainstream. He declared that his organization shall bear true faith and allegiance to uphold sovereignty unity and integrity of the country.
The apparent compulsions, which may have motivated these youngsters in choosing the path of militancy in the past, and which may have had some relevance, in their perception, in the yesteryears, is devoid of all such rationale in the right context. The decision of these youth was lauded as a step in the right direction and it was felt that such events may act harbingers of numerous such positive events in the future. The homecoming of these cadres is a further step towards return of normalcy and peace in Manipur.
