BJP begins signature campaign against economic blockade

IMPHAL, Sept 14: Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), Manipur State Unit has today launched a wide-state signature campaign against the ongoing economic blockades and subsequent failure of the state government to resolve the issue timely.

The signature campaign was inaugurated by state BJP president, Sh Shantikumar at Khwairamband Bazar today.

Speaking to media persons, Sh Shantikumar stated that the people of the state are facing acute shortage of essential commodities due to the economic blockades for the demand and counter-demand of Sadar Hills district. The state government has also failed to bring an amicable solution to the crisis.

The signatures collected during the campaign will be forwarded to the Prime Minister of India and Governor of Manipur urging them to take up appropriate step to redress the grievances of the people, he averred.

Shantikumar further demanded that the state government should make available the essential commodities including petroleum products at the actual price, take up stringent action against black-marketers, grant special subsidy of Rs. 5000 to every household every month till the blockade is over and bring amicable solution to Sadar Hills issue as a soon as possible.

On the other hand, president of Manipur People’s Party (MPP), Dr Nimaichand Luwang told IFP that the issue of economic blockade has become very complex due to the failure of the state government to resolve the issue timely.

The scarcity of essential commodities and abnormal price hike due to economic blockade has caused much suffering to the common people. The inability of the state government to tackle such problems exhibits their inefficiency and hence they must quit, he asserted.

Nimaichand opined that promulgation of President’s Rule would be the best option for effective administration in the state. The agitators of Sadar Hills must also review their stance in due consideration of the suffering of the common people.

He also appealed to the people to call off the counter blockade agitations to prevent any communal violence in the state.
