IMPHAL, Sept 26: Heavy concentration of state security personnel of Thoubal and Kakching police stations has managed to check the occurrence of any violent activities at Kakching Lamkhai on the second day of the indefinite chakka bandh called by the All Manipur Raod Transport Drivers’ and Motor Workers’ union.
Apprehensive about possible bandh related violence at Kakching Lamkhai and Sora areas, the district administration of Thoubal district had resorted to heavy deployment of district security force around the areas since yesterday evening.
However, due to the imposition of the bandh along the Imphal Moreh road, the entire road stretch from Wangjing to Pallel remained deserted while many of the main market centres from Wangking, Khongjom, Sorah, Kakching Lamkhai and Pallel bazaar also remained closed today.
Meanwhile, vice president of Chandel Naga peoples’ Organisation Gabriel informed IFP in a telephonic conversation this afternoon that while the September 23 incident at Thamnapokpi village is unfortunate and had happened as a result of the transporters defying the call for the economic blockade by Naga bodies under the UNC banner.
He also added that the transporters were defying the economic blockade by carrying goods in their vehicles.
The CNPO spokesperson further mentioned that, economic blockade supporters should not be held responsible for the incident and the state government should be held responsible for the incident for its failure to fulfill the demands of the Nagas.
He further condemned the burning down of the 407 truck and damaging of several vehicles and injuring of two youths from Chandel district by the bandh supporters yesterday at Kakching Lamkhai.
Meanwhile, a representative of the All Manipur Raod Transport Drivers’ and Motor Workers’ union has stated that the government has approved their request for monetary compensation for the injured driver and provision of protection at Naga inhabited areas along the road.
However, even with the approval from the government, the union will decide whether to suspend the indefinite chakka bandh during an executive meeting of the union tomorrow he said.
It may be mentioned that, the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers’ and Motor Workers’ union has decided to impose indefinite bandh along the Imphal Moreh road from the morning of September 24, decrying the attacked on the drivers and passengers by the suspected blockade supporters on September 23 evening at Thamnapokpi village along Imphal Moreh road under Pallel police station resulting injuring in of a Tata Sumo driver critically.
