Education vital for development of state: Prof Nandakumar

IMPHAL, Sept 10: The Governor’s Award and Rajkumari Sanatombi Devi Award, 2011 were presented today in a function held at Asha-Jina Complex, Imphal.

The award function was graced by Prof H Nandakumar Sarma, vice-chancellor of Manipur University, Prof IS Khaidem, former chairman of Manipur Public Service Commission, and Prof Mohit Chakrabarti of Visvabharti, Shantiniketan as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

Speaking at the occasion, Prof Nandakumar stressed on the role of education as the backbone of the society without which there can be no progress and development.

He stated that the teachers should dedicate themselves to impart knowledge as well as value education to the students who will be the future pillars of the society. The students should also be motivated to make immense contributions to the welfare and development of the society, Prof Nandakumar added.

He further appealed to the people to uplift the education sector of the state in view of the welfare and development of the state.

The Governor’s Award, 2011 was conferred to Mayanglambam Sushmita Devi of RK Sanatombi Devi Vidyalaya while Rajkumari Sanatombi Devi Awards were presented in various fields of education, sports, traffic police and physically challenged persons.

HSLC topper Ningthoujam Rishikanta of St Joseph’s School, wrestler Sanjenmbam Premabati of Wakha Awang Leikai, boxer Sharjubala of Wangkhei Ayangpalli, cyclist Thokchom Helen of Mayang Imphal, arm-wrestler Chanabam Inaobi Chanu of Iramsiphai, fencer Sagolsem Jayanta of Khurai Konsam Leikai, traffic police Mutum Bijaya Chanu of Khaidem Mayai Leikai and physically challenged Waikhom Priyokumar, Thongam Helena Devi and Pheiroijam Kripa Meetei were the recipients of RK Sanatombi Award, 2011.
