General strike cripples normal life in state, no untoward incident

IMPHAL, Sept 2: The 24-hour general strike called by the JAC against enforced disappearance and arbitrary detention of assistant publicity secretary of RPF, Gurumayum Jiteshwar Sharma alias GM Changjou alias Gypsy of Nagamapal Singjubung Leirak has seriously affected normal life in the state today.

All forms of transport service in the state remained inoperative for the whole day. Most of the educational institutions and market places located mainly in the valley districts remained closed during the general strike.

The general strike has also affected the hill districts as less number of employees turned up in various government offices.

Some women of local Meira Paibi group also burned down the effigies of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi at Khoyathong near ABC Godown today demanding the whereabouts of the missing RPF leader.

In view of  preventing any untoward incident during the general strike, extensive security measures was taken up by state security forces in various vulnerable areas in the valley districts of the state today.

However, there was no report of any unwanted incident during the general strike hours.

The 49-year-old RPF leader from Uripok Nagamapal was reportedly taken away from his rented house near SM College in Dimapur by army men in civvies on August 18 at about 7 pm.

Family members of Sharma reportedly sent a testimony on the alleged enforced disappearance of the PRF leader to Manipur DGP on August 19, a day after he was picked up, wherein the involvement Red Shield Division based in Leimakhong in Imphal was implied.

Fifteen days have passed since his alleged disappearance, but the RPF leader still remained untraceable. The army has not clarified their alleged role on the issue which makes the situation that much more murky.
