Lamphel will be declared as institutional area: CM

IMPHAL Sept 14: The 40th foundation day of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) was celebrated today at the Jubilee Hall of the Institute with Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh as the chief guest.

Addressing the gathering at the foundation day, Chief Minister Ibobi stated that RIMS is the largest central medical institute in the northeastern region. It is an institution not only of regional importance catering to the needs of the northeastern people, but also of national importance imparting undergraduate and post graduate medical education, he said.

He maintained that health is an essential prerequisite part of the life and medical profession is a prestigious service to humanity.

Chief Minister further stated that the MBBS course now includes 15 percent of all India quota.

Sudden influx of additional post graduate students for all India quota numbering 75 per year has created a gap between the requirement and the existing facilities of hostel accommodation and other infrastructures, he noted.

The state government will consult the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare to provide adequate financial assistance to develop necessary infrastructures.

Acknowledging the services of seasoned medical professionals of RIMS, Ibobi stated that the state medical institute, JNIMS could be established only because of the assistance provided by the medical professionals of the reputed medical institute.

“Money is not a problem but we are all aware that manpower or faculty members are one of the most important factors for setting up a medical college,” noted Chief Minister.

He also assured to solve the erratic power supply, poor road and drainage systems lying around the Lamphel, adding that heavy rain has recently inundated low lying campus of RIMS due to poor drainage thereby causing major breakdown in the functioning of RIMS. Necessary steps will be taken up to improve drainage system and prevent such occurrences in future, he added.

Ibobi further assured that the government would take up necessary steps to improve power and water supply to the institute.

He also announced that the road from Nagamapal to supermarket, Lamphelpat will be blacktopped within the month of November at the earliest.

Chief Minister also announced that the government is considering to declare Lamphel as an institutional area in view of providing viable academic atmosphere to the students of various major academic institutes located in the area.

He also asserted that the government is planning to develop water body in Lamphelpat to supply sufficient water to the residents of Lamphel areas who are currently reeling under acute water shortages for daily uses.

It may be mentioned that out of 1800 strong work force in RIMS, about 280 are teaching doctors. The hospital has 1074 beds. During the last 12 months, 2, 81,604 patients attended the OPD, 88,736 patients were treated in the emergency, 36000 were admitted in the wards, 5542 major and 3,382 minor operations were conducted. A total of 2633 doctors, 845 specialist doctors and 22 M. Phil in Clinical Psychology have been produced so far.

The foundation Day was also attended by Dr. Th. Meinya MP Lok Sabha, Prof R.K. Bhabanisana Devi, Retd. Head of Department of Ophthalmology, Prof. Kh. Tomba Singh, Retd. Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Prof. S. Shekharjit Singh, Director RIMS, Prof H. Shanti Singh, i/c Medical Superintendent, RIMS Hospital as the president and the guests of honour respectively.
