Manipur University observes literacy day

IMPHAL Sept 8: The International Literacy Day, 2011 was observed by the Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension, Manipur University at the Community Hall of Maibi Lampak, Thongju Part-II, Imphal East today.

The observation was attended by Prof Amar Yumnam, dean, School of Social Sciences, P Jamini Devi, head, Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension and Chungkham Sumati Devi, Upa-Pradhan of Thongju Part-II GP as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

Prof Ksh Bimola Devi of Department of Political Science, Manipur University, Chinglen Meisnam, associate professor, Department of Economics, Manipur University and social worker Dhanabir Laishram attended the observation as resource persons.

The speakers of today’s function highlighted the need to cultivate well inform society to compete in today’s challenging knowledge based societies. They also affirmed that adult literacy is pivotal for the progress our society.

Addressing the gathering, Prof Amar asserted that Manipur University is dedicating for the service of the society and so the public should grasp the opportunities provided through the department meant for the upliftment of the society.

Apart from other programmes implemented by the university, special vocational training programme is also being facilitated with primary emphasis to younger age groups that require basic educational grounding, he noted.

Citing the importance of Adult education in our society, Dhanabir Laishram recounted that as children are more attached to their grandparents; significant amount of invaluable knowledge is passes to them from their grandparents. Taking cue from his proposition, Dhanabir added that in order to become well informed and sound society, eradication of adult illiteracy from our society has become necessary.
