Many more condemn rape and murder of school girl

IMPHAL, Sept 14: Condemnation from several NGOs, civil bodies continues to pour in against the rape and murder of Vasmi Khaleng at Cheirao Ching on September 11.

All Manipur Women Social Information and Development Samaj (AMWSIDS), All Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL), Tammi-Chingmi Apunba Lup (TCAL) and Universal Mother Organization (UMO) today organized a press conference at the AMWSIDS office located at Palace Compound.

The leaders of the civil bodies urged the government to give capital punishment if the culprit arrested in the case is found guilty. They have also drawn the attention of the government to check if the culprits involved in crime against women and children are let free on the pretext of customary law or monetary agreement.

The women leaders also asked the government to make public on the status report of initiative taken on several pending cases on crimes against women and children.

The Naga Women’s Union (NWU) in a statement said that the brutal rape and murder of student, Vasmi Khaleng, is a grave tragedy to witnessed for the humankind.

It said that brutal and inhuman act has become frequent in our society. It is a high time that our state is reformed beginning from the family level, community level and our society at large and asserted that the incident is not totally accounted to the killer along but each and every individual have a part in restraining the ‘beastly’ act.

Citing the increasing crimes rates at an alarming level the NWU draws the attention of people to fight collectively and appeal the state government to intervene timely in such heinous crime to ensure protection of the weaker section of the society.

The Ukhrul Distirct Alliance for Child Rights (UDACR), Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Ukhrul, District Women Committee (DWC) of UNMM Ukhrul and its associate members organization of DWC strongly condemned the brutal killing of Vasmi Khaleng  and murder of Baby Thurpi Payal, a minor girl of Tangkhul Khullen village on September 4.

In a statement it urged all the concern authorities to expedite investigation and book the culprits immediately and give befitting punishment according to the law of the land.

The organization also expressed great concern over the ever growing trend of violence against women and children in the stat which is otherwise alien to the culture of different communities living in the state.
