Medicine carriers amongst burnt trucks; transporter to cease lifting medicines to state

IMPHAL, September 16: In continued violence relating to the demand for a full-fledged Sadar Hills district, suspected blockade supporters this evening at around 1 pm burnt down two trucks carrying medicines which could amount to Rs 2.30 crores, along the National Highway 37 between Nungkao and Oinamlong, Tamenglong.

Meanwhile, decrying the act of the suspected blockade supporters, the Manipur Druggist and Chemist Association called a press conference at its Imphal office and has set a five-day deadline for the state government to compensate the total cost of the burnt medicines.

Speaking during the conference, Ratan Kumar, general secretary of the association informed the attending media persons that the concerned company involved in the transportation of medicine from Guwahati into the state capital, which he has identified as RCM Logistics, has already warned the association that unless the association or the state government compensate the full amount of the loss incurred by the company due to the burning down of the two loaded trucks, the company has decided to stop with the transportation of medicines into the state.

“The medicines that were burnt down this evening were not meant only for the valley population, but it was meant for distribution throughout the whole state, and meant not only for one community.”

He further stated, “The association had earlier on August 24 requested representatives of both Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee and the United Naga Council through written letters to allow free passage to medicine laden trucks and the SHDDC and UNC had agreed to allow free passage to medicine laden trucks from the next day”.

While further condemning such arson as burning down of medicine, the general secretary has appealed to all concern to abstain from such violent activities in the future.

Further elaborating on the silence of the government on the present turmoil which has resulted from the demand for a separate Sadar Hills district, he queried whether the more than 20 thousand strong security forces present in the state is just to guard the VIPs of the state and to harass the general public.

He further reminded that there has been daily occurrence of burning down of goods laden trucks along the NHs amidst the state government’s assurance of providing full-proof security to all trucks plying on the highways.

Meanwhile, the two trucks carrying medicine and bearing registration numbers AS 0-1CC 6521 and AS 0-1CC 6621, have been totally burnt down.
